Umag and its surroundings have been inhabited since the dawn of civilisation. The prehistoric forts set up on the surrounding hilltops are mute witnesses of that period.
Umag, mentioned for the first time in the 7th century by an anonymous citizen from Ravenna, had already existed in the Roman times. Proof of that is found in the numerous remains of Roman retreats, the so-called villa rustica uncovered all along the coast.
Tennis racquet could be a symbol of the sports and recreational activities Umag offers. The reputable ATP-CROATIAN OPEN national and world tournament is played here. The vicinity of Umag, Istrian inlands, is a unique blend of natural park and mediaeval towns, nowhere else to be found so many on such a small territory. more

Novigrad has developed on the islet joined to the mainland only in the 18th century. The old town has maintained its medieval urban plan until today. The wider area of the town remembers the name of the Roman settlement Emona (Emonia) which became Neapolis in the 6th century and then Civitas Nova. The name of Novigrad is cited in documents for the first time in 599 which means that the town with its 12000 is about to celebrate the 1400th anniversary of its existance.
For some 1300 years, Novigrad was the seat of the bishopric of the same name which was abrogated in 1831.

It is beautiful to experience the old part of town Rovinj, rich with numerous Romanesque - Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, neoclassical windows, balconies, altanas (terraces on the roofs), portals, stairs. Walking through narrow lanes and squares we will be fascinated with the beauty of tightly squeezed houses that hold each other up on the slope underneath the church of St Euphemia. Once, they were protected by the early medieval and renaissance townwalls, partly preserved till today on the north and south sides of the Old Town.
Three of seven town gates have preserved their original shape: St Benedict Gate (today Vrata na obali - the Gate On the Coast), the Gate Under the Wall (Vrata pod zidom) with the inscription from 1590 and the Holy Cross Gate (Vrata Svetog kriza), with the town coat-of-arms, while the Gate of Old Fish Market (today called Balbi's Arch) has seen some changes. more

The legend of the Argonauts describes the pursuit of the Colchidians after the ship Argo and the Golden Fleece. The subjects of the king of Colchis gave up further pursuit after the death of their king's son. Fearing that they would be punished for his death and the failure of the quest if they returned to Colchis, they decided to settle where the prince had died. Pula therefore became not only a harbor of refuge to the Colchidian fugitives, but also their place of exile. The most famous geographer of the antiquity - Strabo - claims that this is how Pula was founded and according to this legend, it was about three thousand years ago. more
